WebIndirect and direct contact mechanisms involved in the bioleaching of ZnS are reported [2]. Microbial catalysis of electrochemical reactions, sulfur and ferrous iron oxidation is clearly shown. Unlike in chemical leaching, interfering sulfur layer formation is effectively taken care of in the presence of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.
