WebFeb 28, 2024 · For the last 25 years, black women have been dying from pregnancy-related complications at rates 3 to 4 times—320% higher—than white women.1 Given that the majority of these deaths are preventable, lingering questions remain. Why is the disparity so high? What is being done to address it? Websentenced to death, yet only a minority (16.1%) within that time span had been executed. More than one third (37.7%) had their murder conviction or death sentence vacated between 1973 and 2013, including more than 150 (1.8%) who were exonerated. Nearly 5% saw their capital sentence commuted to a lesser punishment, whereas 6% died of natural causes.
